More than 1800 people sheltered in campus
39 Kobe University students became the victims of the earthquake

January 18
In the early morning, people living in Higashinada Ward were advised to shelter by the leak of LPG gas.

Photo At Cross-Cultural Studies cafeteria, a rice was boiled by the rice cooker. In the evening, some people even entered the kitchen. The manager Mr.Tanaka said, "We feel fear that nobody will control them, so we led them to the Gymnasium, and the measure to the victims was unified by the university."

About 1800 people took refuge at the Faculties of Agriculture, Engineering and Cross-Cultural Studies at 6 p.m. on Jan. 18. The students and many citizens who had lost their houses had been taking refuge.
About 800 people out of 1800 had moved here from the Ishiyagawa bus garage around 5 p.m.. They took refuge in 40 buses on Jan. 17, but they moved to the Kobe University Gymnasium since the bus service was starting again. One of the families said,"It is light but cold, so we want blankets." They shared some riceballs and sweets, but there was not enough of them.

The relief goods from universities all over Japan
The relief goods delivered to Kobe University included plastic bottles of water, 20 bottles of oolong tea and 100 boxes of cookies from Hyogo University of Teacher Education. The people of Okayama University also sent some goods, and some were going to arrive from Kyoto University and Osaka University. The Kobe University Co-op also helped boiling rice.
"Not enough food at all. We also need some food at the Hospital. Please send us some relief goods." "I don't know how the students and the staff are doing. Some overseas students are out of contact. I want to open as many facilities of the University as possible." said Mr. Sadao Kuroda, the Managing Director of the General Affairs Department.

January 20

The Meteorological Agency announced the earthquake recorded 7 in the Japanese Scale, the biggest ever in Japan, at the epicenter.

About 550 Self-Defense Force members and 90 vehicles were stationed at the grounds of the Faculty of Human Development.

January 21
Death of students at Kobe University gets above 20

Photo About 20 students of Kobe University had been killed, including the head of the Cheering Party.
Hideki Takami (Economics, junior) had just taken up the post of the head of the Kobe University Cheering Party in December. He died because of the collapse of his apartment in Tomoda-cho, Nada Ward. The fisrt floor of the apartment was collapsed.
The area most students at Kobe University lived were between Nada Ward and Higashinada Ward, where damages were the worst. Mr. Hakuso Niimi, the director of Student Affairs Division, said "It seems there are more than 20 deaths only of our students. The staff of each faculty have been concerned about the students' safety. But it is hard to make a connection, and even when the name of the victims on the newspaper corresponded with the student in our list, we had no way of confirmation. " (NEWS NET flash)

Photo University cannot make plans about entrance examination
According to the Student Affairs Division, plans including entarnce examinations, a year-end exam and graduation were under consideration as of noon.(NEWS NET)

January 23

The substitute buses resumed the service along the stopped areas of Hankyu, JR and Hanshin Lines.

The volunteers of Kobe University students started a fund-raising campaign.
The volunteer activities began in various places, including a fund raising campaign by the volunteer organization of Kobe University, which began in front of JR Osaka Station.

'Student Relief Party' was established
On the 22th, Kobe University Relief Party of students which moved from LANS BOX to the circle union box of the Cross-Cultural campus was officially established. Relief goods were sent to the shelter, but not to the tent village. They had already begun the activity to solve such contradictions. (the Relief Party Communications etc.)

January 25

Water supply revived in part of Rokkodai.

About 300 people who took refuge at the University Hospital left there and went to other near by refuges such as Kobe Bunka-Hall.
On Jan. 26, all sections of Kobe University Hospital were ready for any incoming patients.

January 26

Photo Hanshin railway partially reopened to Ogi Station.

The team of psychiatrists from Kobe University started to visit sufferers. After that, a team of plastic surgeons, and dentists, also came.

January 28
The victim students at Kobe University reached 39.

Photo It was confirmed that 39 students, 1 professor emeritus and 2 staffs from Kobe University died. According to the Ministry of Education, by January 28, the number of the fatalities of university students reached 111. The detail was as follows:

January 29
The problem is the restoration of student's apartment

Kobe University Co-op suggested building temporary shelters for sufferers with the money provided by the national university Co-op. Whether this suggestion was accepted or not depended on the decision made in the Student Affairs Bereau meeting held in February 6.
On the other hand, the Student Affairs Bureau considered to build temporary shelters in the open space of the dormitory in Sumiyoshi, and also decided to accept students who lost the place to live, 150 boys and 50 girls, in the dormitory of Sumiyoshi. (NEWS NET)

Photo The students come to the university for the first time since the day of the earthquake

On January 30, 31 and February 2, students came to university for the first time since the day of the earthquake. Each faculty investigated what damage they suffered or whether they were safe or not, and explained the schedule for the exams. Every faculty, term papers took the place of tests. Some people were relieved that their friends were safe, while others were shocked by the deaths of their friends.
