-Heartrending Grief- The ex-president, Masahiro Suzuki
If I am asked what the most tough thing was, I would say: the first thing is that 39 students were killed, and the second was that the staff have helped 2000 sufferers, but they themselves were also sufferers.
I heard on TV that most of the old wooden houses in Nada and Higashi-Nada Wards were nearly destroyed. So I was worried whether there were some victims in our students. The number of the dead had been steadily increasing whenever I asked. I felt my heart rending as a university professor.
The houses of the staff who were taking care of sufferers were severly damaged or totally destroyed. Their eyes were gradually sunk, they had receding chins, and their faces were getting dirty (because they couldn't have a bath). I heard that some families, who remained in the gym until the closing, have left words of thanks. So my eyes were wet with tears again.
