The Self-Defense Forces evacuate from Kobe University

April 1
Photo JR Lines were reopened for service

The Tokaido Shinkansen Line (Japan Railway) started the service. The Rokkomichi Station, which had collapsed, was also restored. On Apr.8, the Sanyo Shinkansen Line was fully reopened.

April 3
Earthquake special examination was done

Earthquake special examination was in operation on the D course at 35 national universities including Kobe University.

April 5
The refuge in the Faculty of Human Development campus disappeared

The shelter in the Faculty of Human Development, which took in 50 people, finished its role.

April 6
The Entrance Ceremony in the campus

The Entrance Ceremony was held in the campus of Kobe University, mainly at the Rokkodai Auditorium, because all transports were not reopened. 2787 (26 of whom were successful candidates from earthquake special examination) were enrolled at Kobe University. The students wanted were 2715, and the candidates counted 16624. This number of new students increased by 290 and the rate of increase was 12% to the previous year.

April 10
The new school year started at all faculties

While Kwansei Gakuin University and Kobe College put off the lectures, Kobe University started the lectures as usual.

A meeting for volunteers was held

A meeting named "volunteer activity of Kobe University students: effects, problems and needs" was held in the meeting room of the Faculty of Law. About 100 people including teachers at the society for the study of the earthquake and students took part in.

April 13
Refuge at the Graduate School of Science and Techonology disappeared

Photo A shelter at the Graduate School of Science and Techonology did its part. This shelter had a lot of students who had lost their apartments. At most 70 people lived their lives there with blankets, sleeping bags, books and radios. The shelter at the Sumiyoshi Primary School was closed on Apr.16.

April 23
Professor Nomura, who made much effort in the research of the earthquake, was killed in a traffic accident

Mr. Ryotaro Nomura, a prfessor at the Faculty of Letters (natural geography), died at the age of 48 when his bike collided with a truck on the crossing of Takaha-cho, Nada Ward. He had studied the destruction of tombstones and earthquake geographical study. Researched these topics almlst every day with his motorbike. He had proposed the establishment of the society for the study of the earthquake.

April 26
The Self-Defense Forces withdrew from Kobe University

Photo The Self-Defence Forces based in the Faculty of Human Deveropment withdrew. The long curtain on which the words "Thank you Self-Defense Forces" was written was stretched across verandas of the houses in the northern part of the ground.

May 10
Establishment of Kobe University General Volunteer Center

4 students, who suggested this center, instituted it to make a united organisation of Kobe University for volunteers, and they tried to make it an approved group.

June 12

All lines of Hankyu Railways were reopened.

June 17
Kobe University defeated Kyoto University in the regular baseball game

A baseball game between Kobe University and Kyoto University was held at the Yoshida Ground of Kyoto University. Kobe defeated Kyoto by 3 to 1. (NEWS NET)
In campuses of Rokkodai and the Faculty of Cross Cultural Studies, there were camps of the Self Defence Forces and bathtubs for the refugees. That prevented sport activities for a long time.(NEWS NET)

June 26

Photo All lines of Hanshin Railways were reopened.

Symposium for Volunteers

Kobe University General Volunteer Center held a symposium about temporary dwellings at the Faculty of Letters.

Photo: Collasped Kobe Shimbun Hall. At the 8th floor was an office of "Ryoso Party" (an alumni association of the Faculties of Economics, Buisiness Administration and Law). The building was dismantled leaving many data in the office. Taken in Jan. 1995. NEWS NET

June 29
"3 Inter-university Matches" started at Osaka City University

"The 35th 3 Inter-university Matches"(among Kobe University, Hitotsubashi University and Osaka City University) started at Osaka City University. (Ichi-Dai Journal=UNN)

July 15

The Architecture class at the Faculty of Engineering held a symposium in Shigaku Kaikan Hall. The title was "Suggestion for Reconstruction plan from Kobe University: a new point of view of preventing disaster and urban development".

August 5

The class of Sociology of Law at the Faculty of Law held a symposium "The conference on sociology of law: post RCSR'95 in Kobe" at Kobe International Conference Hall.

August 20
Refuge in the Faculty of Engineering campus was broken up

Photo The shelter for the refugees in the conference room of the Faculty of Engineering did its part. In the shelter, 120 sufferers lived at the peak of the disaster's aftermath.
